RAYMOND, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department says a man died scuba diving while he was trying to recover an all terrain vehicle that had gone through the ice of Maine’s Sebago Lake.

On Tuesday, officials identified the diver as Steven Viola, 53, of Gray. The Medical Examiner’s Office will be conducting tests this morning in Augusta to determine the cause of death.

Viola was not breathing when he was pulled from the water around 1:30 p.m. Monday in Raymond by his support team.

Sheriff’s Captain Don Goulet says the man may have suffered from a medical event leading to the incident.
