BANGOR, Maine — Police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old at an apartment on Bald Mountain Drive, the department said Tuesday.

Police responded to a medical call shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday, and an officer was still posted outside the apartment in late afternoon.

Every death is deemed “suspicious when it involves the death of a child,” said department spokesman Sgt. Paul Edwards on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s not that it’s suspicious in nature; it’s concerning to us when a child is involved.”

The call for help came by phone, but Edwards declined to release any other details, including who called police, whether the child was a boy or a girl, whether the child was dead when rescue crews and police arrived or who was at the apartment.

He said no charges were pending and no one was being detained.

A neighbor who asked not to be identified said news of the death was heartbreaking.

“I’m sorry that that happened,” she said.

Two adults and the baby moved into the apartment a couple of months ago, she said, but the neighbor didn’t know them. “I just saw them go in and out,” she said.

The child’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta. A representative of the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that an autopsy was scheduled for today.

Edwards said by e-mail that a medical examiner’s investigation takes place anytime a child under age 3 dies.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Edwards said Tuesday.

“We have an officer up there now,” he added, not indicating why.
