ELLSWORTH, Maine — Police officers responding to a report of an underage drinking party Saturday night were met by a teenager wielding a rifle, according to reports.

Ellsworth police received an anonymous complaint about the party at a residence on Mariaville Road at about 11 p.m. Saturday. Three officers from the Ellsworth Police Department and several Maine State Police troopers responded.

According to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department, Ellsworth Officer Andrew Weatherbee knocked on the door of the residence. A 16-year-old boy carrying a rifle answered.

“He pointed the rifle at Officer Weatherbee,” Page said Monday. “The officer drew his weapon and started screaming at the kid, ‘Drop the gun, drop the gun.’”

When the other officers heard Weatherbee shouting at the teenager, they too drew their weapons. The boy initially hesitated, but after a few seconds, he lowered the rifle.

“There were a few tense moments,” Page said. “I’m sure it felt like a lifetime to Andrew, but it was over in a few seconds. It’s fortunate that no one was hurt.”

The rifle, a bolt-action .22, was not loaded.

According to Page, the boy later said he did not know it was the police outside the house.

The boy had been drinking, and a test with a portable breath test device indicated his blood alcohol level was 0.06.

The boy was arrested and charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol. He was taken to the Mount View Youth Development Center in Charleston.

The boy’s parents were not at home at the time of the incident.

Officers broke up the party and charged seven others with underage drinking.

They arrested Jeffrey Jordan, 20, of Ellsworth on an active warrant charging him with failure to appear. Jordan also was charged with violation of bail conditions and illegal possession of liquor by a minor.

Anderson Flach, 18, of Ellsworth was charged with illegal possession of liquor by a minor.

In addition, five juveniles were charged with possession by consumption of liquor by a minor, including a girl, 14, from Hancock; a boy, 15, from Brooksville; a boy, 16, from Otis; a boy, 17, from Prospect Harbor; and a boy, 17, from Surry.
