‘American Idol’ in the midst of its best season

The Man on the Couch predicted this would be the best season yet of “American Idol” and I couldn’t agree more.

We’re down to the top 24 and while some of my favorites already have been sent home, and a few remain that I’m not overly impressed with, I don’t know how the judge’s managed to narrow down the field.

Even though my first pick of the season so far was eliminated — remember country mountain boy Dave Pittman — after Hollywood week I have a few more opinions to share.

I was ready for Thaddeus Johnson to make it to the final few, but since he was up against Andrew Garcia to be given the final male spot and failed to make it through, I have to pick Garcia to go far.

We’ve loved Garcia in our house since his first audition and cried like we were watching an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” when the judges told him he would made it to the top 24. Garcia is a genuine family man putting it all on the line for his son and his girl and he’s exactly the kind of guy you want to see succeed.

I also am looking forward to see some more of Lacey Brown for a long time to come. Her version of “It’s a Wonderful World” knocked my socks off and she has grown so much as a singer, and I think as a person, since last season’s auditions.

To throw a few more names out there, it will be interesting to see if Crystal Bowersox ends up ditching the dreads and grungy clothes for a more sophisticated look, or stays true to who she is. The decision could make or break it in the end, but I’m rooting for her.

I also was upset to see Angela Martin knocked out of the running, but think the judges (Kara, in particular) handled the situation well. Angela has been one of my favorites during auditions from the last two seasons and I was hoping that this would be the big break that would break the curse she seems to be under. Her father was killed, her daughter suffers from debilitating seizures, and she’s just had a rough go of it, but I hope she keeps at it and that someday I’m pleasantly surprised to hear her first hit single.
