BREWER, Maine — Lack of snow on the ground has prompted the Brewer Winterfest committee to cancel the snow softball competition scheduled for this weekend’s two-day festival.
The fact that there is little snow on the hill behind the Brewer Auditorium also means planned sledding will not occur, unless the snowfall forecast for this week covers the area.
“Due to the frozen ground and potentially dangerous conditions, Brewer Winterfest has decided to cancel the softball games that were planned for Saturday,” said Tanya Pereira, event organizer, on Wednesday in an e-mail. “All other Winterfest activities continue as scheduled.”
The eighth annual Winterfest includes family events that start Friday and continue into Saturday.
On tap for Friday are a reception with music, 6-8 p.m., ice sculpting and a 7 p.m. fireworks display by Central Maine Pyrotechnics, all at the Muddy Rudder restaurant along the Penobscot River. The ice rink at Doyle Field also will be lighted for ice skating between 6 and 8 p.m.
Saturday’s events include a French toast breakfast, 8-10 a.m., and children’s activities, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Brewer Auditorium; noon-2 p.m. chili and chowder cook-offs and an ice sculpting competition at the Muddy Rudder; and a bonfire 5-7 p.m. at the Acme Road outdoor ice rink.
