Is America more partisan than ever before?

Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana has announced he will not seek re-election this fall, and blames the bitter partisan divide in Congress for souring him on serving. Are elected officials, especially in Washington D.C., more partisan than any time in the last 10, 25 or 50 years? Can you think of a time in your life when there was a more sharp divide, such as during the Cold War years and the McCarthy era? What about during the early 1960s when the civil rights movement divided Congress, or the late 1960s when the

Vietnam War was the issue that split politicians? Or are other factors at work in magnifying that perception, such as 24/7 TV news coverage and the rise of Internet bloggers?
