BOSTON — Boston University used third-period goals by Zach Cohen and Nick Bonino to break a 2-2 tie and complete a weekend sweep over the University of Maine with a 5-2 men’s hockey victory.
Cohen’s game-winner came on the power play as he came off the boards into the slot and banged home the rebound of a Dave Warsofsky point shot. Maine goalie Scott Darling made the initial save off Cohen but Cohen tucked the second rebound under the crossbar.
Bonino extended the lead when he came out out the corner and had his centering pass deflect into the net off Maine defenseman Jeff Dimmen’s skate. Eric Gryba added a power-play goal in the final minute.
Maine’s Dimmen erased a pair of one-goal deficits.
Cory Trevino staked BU to a 1-0 lead in the first period but Dimmen equalized on a point shot on the power play midway through the first period. Chris Connolly gave BU its second lead with a backhander inside the far post midway through the second period.
But again Dimmen equalized, this time by sweeping home a Gustav Nyquist pass. The Black Bears were hurt by penalties in the third period as they gave BU five consecutive power plays.
BU outshot Maine 35-30.
Maine returns home to host Lowell in a two-game set next weekend.
