BANGOR, Maine — Even though they had the top seed heading into tournament play, prognosticators pegged the

Presque Isle girls as an underdog to eighth-ranked Waterville.

After all, the Panthers had plenty of mystique as the three-time reigning state champions.

But Wildcats freshman Chandler Guerrette silenced those critics, pouring in a game-high 25 points to lead coach Jeff Hudson’s club to a 52-37 win at the Bangor Auditorium Saturday.

Presque Isle (18-1) meets No. 4 Nokomis in Wednesday’s semifinal while Waterville finishes 12-8.

The quick, athletic ‘Cats came out with a lot of intensity on both ends of the floor, using a box-and-one defense to stymie Waterville star Jen Nale, holding her to 13 points on 6-for-19 shooting.

Waterville stayed close in the first half, trailing only 23-16 at halftime, but Presque Isle put it away with a 15-4 third-quarter run, with Guerrette scoring 12 of those points.

Presque Isle’s lead peaked as high as 19 in the second half.

Krista Kofstad contributed nine points while grabbing six rebounds for the Wildcats while Kayla Richards had three assists. Chelsea Nickerson hauled down eight rebounds.

Taylor Frame was the other Panther in double figures with 13 points.
