OLD TOWN, Maine — Police are asking for the public’s help in their effort to find a “person of interest” they want to question in connection with the theft of a wallet last week.

The wallet, which belonged to an 80-year-old woman, disappeared around lunchtime on Feb. 3 after she accidentally left it behind at the KFC restaurant in Old Town, said Old Town police Sgt. Travis Roy.

When she realized that she had left the wallet, the woman returned to the restaurant, and it was gone, Roy said Thursday.

“Everything this woman had for funds was in that wallet,” Roy said.

“We are asking the public to help us identify this person so that we can pursue this case and get her money back,” he said.

Roy said investigators were not releasing the amount of cash the woman was carrying or any other details about the contents of the wallet.

How to help

Anyone with information about the theft should call 827-6358 and ask for Sgt. Roy or Detective Tom Adams.

Roy said police and restaurant management reviewed video footage and have identified a male in the photos as a person of interest in the investigation.

“At this point, we’re not calling him a suspect. We just want to talk to him,” Roy said.

The person of interest can be seen in still photographs extracted from the restaurant’s surveillance footage. He is shown wearing a dark-colored jacket with writing on the back of it, Roy noted. The unidentified man appears to be in his late teens to mid-20s, and between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall.

Roy said that in the surveillance footage, the man is seen acting suspiciously in the area where the wallet was left. When the man disappeared from view, so did the wallet, he said.

Sgt. Roy credited the Brewer Police Department with helping enhance the images from the restaurant’s surveillance system.

“Brewer PD has some new video technology and were more that willing to assist us,” Roy said.

Brewer police acquired the sophisticated system, known as Star Witness, in the spring of 2008.

The system enables investigators to isolate, enhance and sharpen videos, including those from cruiser cameras and those from store surveillance tapes.

Old Town police hope someone will recognize the man from the restaurant images, and provide the information needed to solve the case, Roy said.

Anyone with any information about the theft should call 827-6358 and ask for Sgt. Roy or Detective Tom Adams.
