Union man, 51, dies after ATV ejects him

UNION, Maine — A 51-year-old Union man is dead after his all-terrain vehicle flipped over a snowbank and ejected him on Tuesday.

Joel T. McMurray and a friend were driving their two four-wheelers south on Barrett Hill Road Tuesday night, according to acting Sgt. Michael Sprague at the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.

“[McMurray] drifted off the road and into a snowbank on the northbound side,” Sprague said. “[The ATV] flipped when he hit the snowbank. It ejected the operator.”

Sprague said McMurray was not wearing a helmet.

McMurray’s friend called for help at 10:20 p.m. and gave McMurray cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The cause of death has not been released, but Sprague said, “There were signs of traumatic head injury.
