Longtime assistant Dana Corey has been named the new varsity baseball coach at Brewer High School.

Corey, a Brewer native who works at the high school and also serves as an assistant football coach for the Witches, was approved for the baseball post at the most recent meeting of the Brewer School Committee.

“He’s just a natural fit for us,” said Brewer athletic administrator Dennis Kiah of Corey, who also is a veteran youth baseball coach in the city.

Corey replaces Dave Morris, who stepped down last summer after 12 seasons with the Witches. Morris guided Brewer to a 135-66 record, including an Eastern Maine Class A championship in 2008 as well as additional appearances in the regional final in both 2004 and 2007.

Brewer made 12 straight trips to postseason play under Morris, including last spring when the Witches finished sixth in the final Eastern A Heal point ratings with a 12-6 record and reached the regional quarterfinals before being ousted by No. 3 Cony of Augusta 4-3 in 11 innings.

Cony went on to win the regional championship before falling to Deering of Portland 2-1 in the state final.

Brewer never failed to have a winning season during Morris’ coaching tenure, and after consecutive 9-8 records in 1999 and 2000 the Witches won at least 10 games per season during Morris’ final 10 seasons with the program.

Corey is a 1969 graduate of Brewer High School where he played baseball and football for the Witches. Corey then had a stellar career as an outfielder at the University of Maine before going on to play baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization.
