Maine jail officer charged with sexual assault

PORTLAND, Maine — A corrections officer at Maine’s largest county jail has been charged with gross sexual assault for allegedly having sex with a female inmate.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said 41-year-old Gerald Gilbert Jr. of South Portland was released on $5,000 bail after being charged Tuesday.
Gilbert has worked at the Cumberland County Jail since 2007. He has been put on paid leave pending a hearing.
