BELFAST, Maine — Police arrested a Belfast man over the weekend after he allegedly attacked his partner’s elderly mother, hurting her badly enough that she was treated at a hospital.

Mark Belleisle, 52, was charged with aggravated assault and was being held Tuesday at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset with bail set at $10,000.

According to Belfast Police Chief Jeff Trafton, Belleisle spent most of Friday night away from his Smart Road home but returned at 4 a.m. Saturday.

“That’s when the argument started,” Trafton said.

The 78-year-old victim later told responding police officers that Belleisle had grabbed her and thrown her to the floor, lacerating her elbow and arm. The woman also was bruised in the alleged attack.

She made an emergency 911 call at 7:22 a.m., and was taken to Waldo County General Hospital for treatment and later released.

When Officer Eric Kelley arrived at the home, he noted that Belleisle was very intoxicated and that children were present.

“Belleisle is very familiar to the Police Department,” Trafton said. “He has a long history.”
