GUILFORD, Maine — A teenage girl who swerved her vehicle Thursday night to avoid a dead deer in her lane collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, a sheriff’s officer said Friday.

Adriena Desmarais, 17, of Guilford was headed to Guilford at 5:30 p.m. when she spotted the dead deer lying in her lane after rounding a curve, according to Investigator Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

Desmarais swerved into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Daniel Bayerdorffer, 38, of Willimantic. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and their air bags deployed, Dow said.

Dow said OnStar, an emergency alert system in Bayerdorffer’s 2004 GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle, informed police of the crash.

Desmarais was taken by ambulance to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. She was treated for cuts and bruises and later was released, Dow said.

Bayerdorffer was not injured, according to Dow.

Desmarais’ 2001 Subaru and Bayerdorffer’s vehicle both were demolished.
