PORTLAND, Maine — Maine school districts are getting an earlier than usual look at next year’s state aid figures. Only 12 of Maine’s 183 school districts will get more state aid for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The figures reflect a $92 million drop in state aid that stems from recession-related revenue losses.

The Education Department’s director of Finance, Jim Rier, says for some districts the numbers are better than expected. Others will see dramatic impacts. The department provides a breakdown of expected funding levels on its web site.

The Portland Press Herald says state aid figures are usually released in late March, but the department got them out earlier this year. The funding must still be approved by the Legislature.
