Bangor police arrest 2 on burglary, other charges

Bangor police arrested two local teenagers early Thursday with the help of a witness and a state trooper’s tracking dog.

An 18-year-old man, identified as Dakota Ashby, and a 17-year-old, whose name was withheld because of his age, each were charged with Class C burglary, criminal mischief and theft. The felony burglary charge is punishable by up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

Ashby, who was taken to Penobscot County Jail after his arrest, was released on bail later in the day, a jail official confirmed Thursday night.

The juvenile was released to a parent, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

According to Edwards, the incident that led to the arrests began about 2:15 a.m., when city police officers went to the Neighborhood Market on Grove Street to investigate a report of a burglary. Information from a witness indicating that two suspects were leaving the area was relayed to the officers, Edwards said.

Bangor police Officer Russ Twaddell, who was in the area at the time, encountered two young men walking in the area of the 100 block of Broadway. While Twaddell was interviewing the two, Maine State Police Trooper Seth Edwards and his tracking dog Boris, who also were in the vicinity, were able to demonstrate a con-nection between the suspects and the crime scene, Edwards said.
