Country singer Alan Jackson got it right with his lyrics, “God Bless Texas.” After waiting a couple of weeks for that “American Idol” moment that makes us all believe in the dream, Texas brought it big time and we saw it more than once.
Todrick Hall, with his original song, was impressive, not “cute,” as Simon said. But one of my favorites had to be Dave Pittman. The country mountain boy may have Tourette’s syndrome, but it doesn’t have him. Once he opens his mouth to sing, his face doesn’t twitch, and there’s no need to clear his throat because what comes from deep inside is pure musical talent. So, here’s my first prediction. We’re going to see Pittman in the top 12.
The dream also came alive on reality TV last weekend, but in another form. For those of you have had read this column for a long time, you might recall that when “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” arrived to tackle a project in coastal Maine, I said that the behind-the-scenes access made the show lose some of its magic. Well, the magic was back last weekend when Ty and his crew went to New York.
Not only did they take on the task of creating a safe home for the Powell family, they took on a community. The “Extreme Makeover” crew, with the help of more than a thousand volunteers, helped rejuvenate the community by completing more than 60 projects.
What started with a mission to help mom Delores Powell, who moved her family from Jamaica to give them a better life and ended up with a code enforcement nightmare, turned into neighbors helping neighbors remove graffiti, get hot running water, clean up neglected front yards and finish basic maintenance projects — stretching back to Powell’s homeland.
As a little girl, Powell, like many in Jamaica, couldn’t afford shoes. Her first U.S. paycheck went to family still in Jamaica so they could buy footware. Ty and the “Extreme” team sent shoes to all the children who attended the school Powell had attended as a child.
If you didn’t catch it last Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC, it’s not too late. Go to www.abc.go.com to see the full episode online.
