‘Neicy’ at 90

Bernie “Neicy” Arthur is celebrating her 90th birthday by showing some of her artwork at the Aarhus Gallery in Belfast — more than six decades of drawings, writing and sculpture. Arthur, originally from the Boston area, now lives in Belfast and will display her work through February. Arthur works in many mediums, from her early pencil drawings, to her found sculpture and paintings created later in life. Arthur’s early work depicts life in New York during World War II, with delicately sketched pencil drawings done on subway platforms and while she worked in hospitals. Her later work depicts ocean scenes, still lifes and families, colorfully detailing the world in which she lived. She also makes sculpture, mostly from recycled objects, and in recent years has turned to collage — all with a unique, humorous eye for daily life and its small curiosities. Arthur has taught workshops on creativity and is the author of several magazine articles and two self-published books. Arthur’s daughter, Willy Reddick, is a Belfast-area artist, who will show her work alongside her mother’s, as will more than 25 other midcoast artists. The Aarhus Gallery is located at 50 Main St in downtown Belfast. For information, visit
