Greenbush, SADs 31, 41 share services

By Nick Sambides Jr., BDN Staff

No one is discussing consolidation, but SADs 31 and 41 and the town of Greenbush are sharing some administrative services this year as part of a pilot program that could result in some savings, SAD 31 Superintendent Jerry White said Monday.

The principals, curriculum coordinator and superintendents of SADs 31 and 41 and the town have met several times since September, and have begun sharing the services of SAD 31 curriculum coordinator Catherine Menard, White said.

“It’s probably something short of consolidation,” White said Monday. “None of the participants have really talked about anything other than cooperative ventures, and we are actually getting some things done along those lines.”

SAD 31, which serves Burlington, Edinburg, Enfield, Howland, Maxfield and Passadumkeag, shares financial services with Greenbush, formerly a member of Union 90, White said. White also serves as the town’s superintendent.

SAD 41, which serves Atkinson, Brownville, LaGrange, Lake View Plantation and Milo, had discussed consolidating with SAD 31 officials last April so both school administrative districts would comply with a state law requiring consolidation, but those talks never came to a vote.

SADs 31 and 41 also are discussing sharing staff development services.

“I consider this year as sort of a pilot program of what we can accomplish,” White said, “and then I think at the end of the year we will take stock and say, OK, are there other things we can do.”

No one has yet calculated what the sharing of Menard’s position, which began in September, would save the districts financially, White said.

“At this point, we haven’t divvied that position up, and I am not sure that we are going to until we see what the commitment the other districts want to make is and how they want to make it,” he said.

The SADs 31 and 41 school boards likely will meet in March or April to see what other service-sharing proposals can be made, he said.
