UMaine shuts out U.S. Under-18 Team

ORONO, Maine – Freshman goalie Shawn Sirman made 33 saves and sophomore right wing Gustav Nyquist and sophomore defenseman Will O’Neill had a goal and two assists apiece as the University of Maine carved out a hard-fought 4-0 exhibition hockey win over the United States Under-18 Team at Alfond Arena on Saturday night.

Sirman made several Grade-A (high-percentage) saves en route to the shutout, including a breakaway stop off Teddy Agostino in the second period.

Brett Carriere’s first-period goal proved to be the game-winner as he followed up shots by O’Neill and Theo Andersson and tapped the puck into the empty net. Team USA goalie Jack Campbell (23 saves) had made the initial saves off O’Neill and Andersson, but Andersson’s rebound squirted into the crease area.

Freshman defenseman Nick Pryor and Nyquist scored second-period goals before O’Neill added a late goal with 2:42 left in the game.

Pryor’s goal was set up by Nyquist, who stickhandled the puck behind the net and evaded a check before sliding it across to Pryor, who had a half-empty net and deposited it.

Nyquist made it 3-0 by firing a one-timer past Campbell into the short side off a diagonal pass from the left point by O’Neill.

O’Neill capped the scoring in the third period when his wrister from the left point deflected in off a Team USA skate.

Team USA outshot Maine 33-27.
