Woodland student gets grant for fundraiser

Woodland Consolidated Community School fifth-grader Simone Michaud, 10, recently won a grant to organize a fundraiser for the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen in Caribou, reports her mother, Katie Michaud.

Simone was one of 70 recipients of a Disney Minnie Grant from Youth Service America that enables “children and youth around the world to assume leadership roles developing and implementing community service projects,” according to a YSA release.

Simone’s project is a Community Spaghetti Supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at WCCS.

Co-sponsors include her fifth-grade class, Caribou High School National Honor Society and community members.

Admission is $5 for the event featuring live music and door prizes.

The Big Read, featuring Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild,” is Jan. 22-Feb. 21, according to information provided by Kathy Weathers.

Participants include 11 libraries, 12 schools and an estimated 1,200 readers on seven Maine coastal islands, and kickoff events are 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at Reach Performing Arts Center on Deer Isle and 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Mount Desert Island High School.

Amy Lemire reports Morgan Hill Event Center will hold an Evening of Country Rock Music with doors opening at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at MHEC in Hermon.

Admission is $10 at the door or $8 in advance, and a portion of the proceeds benefits MERT Enterprises, a Bangor-area social service agency providing services to adults with developmental disabilities and autism.

John Miller reports potential runners and supporters of the third annual Hearts Warming Hearts Bikini and Speedo Dash 2010, planned for Valentine’s Day, are invited to a pep rally at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Happy Crab in Eastport.

Proceeds from the event provide fuel assistance to those in need.

Tim Baude of Bangor Parks and Recreation Department e-mailed it is offering discount lift tickets to Sugarloaf Mountain for Saturday, Jan. 30.

An adult lift ticket will be $42, $33 less than a regular ticket, and a young adult ticket will be $32 for a savings of $32.

A minimum of 20 participants are needed for these rates to apply, Baude said.

Skiers provide their own transportation, and a Bangor Parks and Recreation Department staff member will hand out tickets at the mountain.

Lynn Doughty invites eighth-graders to Step-up Day at John Bapst Memorial High School, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at JBMHS, 100 Broadway, Bangor.

Cindy Freeman Cyr e-mailed that Womancare’s third annual Valentine’s for a New Day Ball is 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Penquis Higher Education Center on Mayo Street, Dover-Foxcroft.

Proceeds benefit Womancare, which provides services for people in Piscataquis County who are affected by domestic abuse.

Tickets are $25 each and are available at Womancare, 8 Mechanic St., and Mr. Paperback, both in Dover-Foxcroft, from members of the Miosac Club, or call 564-8165.
