Police investigate 16 break-ins on MDI

By Bill Trotter, BDN Staff

MOUNT DESERT, Maine — Police are investigating break-ins and vandalism at more than a dozen seasonal homes on Northern Neck, a peninsula that juts into Long Pond near the village of Somesville, according to the local police chief.

James Willis of Mount Desert Police Department said Wednesday that, on the whole, the damage to the homes is extensive.

“We’ve confirmed 16 [break-ins],” the chief said. “We’re not positive, but we think [they occurred] over the past weekend.”

The break-ins were discovered Tuesday morning, after a caretaker called police to report damage at one of the properties. Police went out to investigate and discovered that several other neighboring properties also had been burglarized and damaged.

“We discovered the majority of these on our own,” Willis said. “It’s mostly property destruction. We don’t even know yet if anything is missing.”

Some houses and their contents have been damaged more than others, Willis said, but because of the ongoing investigation, he declined to specify exactly what kind of damage took place.

“It’s substantial, cumulatively,” he said.

Willis said the main road onto Northern Neck is kept plowed during the winter because there are residents who live out there year round. But people also skate or ice fish on Long Pond in the winter, he said, and there was a lot of such activity on the pond last weekend. It is possible that whoever damaged the properties went out there on the ice rather than on the road, he said.

Willis said other camp owners in the area who have not been contacted by police or caretakers should check on their properties to see whether they might have been vandalized.

“If anyone saw anything over the weekend, they should give us a call,” Willis said.
