Mount Desert police investigating Northern Neck break-ins

By Bill Trotter, BDN Staff

MOUNT DESERT, Maine — Local police are investigating break-ins and vandalism at more than a dozen seasonal homes on Northern Neck, a peninsula that juts into Long Pond near the local village of Somesville, according to the local police chief.

James Willis of Mount Desert Police Department said Wednesday that, on the whole, the damage to the homes is extensive.

“We’ve confirmed 16 [break-ins],” the chief said. “We’re not positive, but we think [they occurred] over the past weekend.”

The break-ins were discovered Tuesday morning, after a caretaker called local police to report damage at one of the properties, according to Willis. Police went out to investigate and discovered that several other neighboring properties also had been buglarized and damaged.

“We discovered the majority of these on our own,” Willis said. “It’s mostly property destruction. We don’t even know yet if anything is missing.”
