DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — A handgun was among items stolen when thieves broke into four homes between 2 and 5 p.m. last Tuesday in the Dover-Foxcroft and Dexter areas.
Police said they believe the thieves knocked on the doors to find out whether anyone was in the homes before kicking in doors to gain entry.
“All of these break-ins appeared to be similar. They were all done the same day and most likely were done by the same person or people,” Dover-Foxcroft police Officer Todd Lyford said Monday.
Lyford said thieves broke into a home on Greeley’s Landing Road, where they took a handgun, jewelry, a computer and small items. At a break-in on Bolton Road, the thieves took a digital camera, iPods and a jewelry box containing jewelry.
Jewelry, medicines and paperwork were taken during a break-in on Dover Road, according to Christine Pooler of the Dexter Police Department. At a Crawford Road home in Dexter, the thieves went into a bedroom and removed $23 from a wallet, she said Monday.
The medicines and paperwork taken in the Dover Road break-in later were found discarded on Greeley’s Landing Road. The jewelry box, which had been emptied, was recovered on Bolton Road.
Police want to question a young woman of interest.
The woman, who was wearing a blue ski cap, was reported to have knocked on the door of a Sunken Bridge Road home at noon Tuesday. When the homeowner answered the door, the woman said she was looking for someone who had advertised puppies for sale, according to Dexter police. The owner of the home at the Corinna end of Sunken Bridge Road told police two people were waiting outside in the young woman’s vehicle, which was a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle had a body repair patch on the driver’s side.
Police aren’t sure whether this vehicle and the woman are connected to the break-ins but they want to locate both, according to Officer Todd Lyford of the Dover-Foxcroft Police Department.
Lyford said anyone with information about the woman or the vehicle, or anyone who opened a door last Tuesday to someone making an inquiry, is asked to contact either the Dover-Foxcroft Police Department at 564-8021 or the Dexter Police Department at 924-7622.
