AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine state offices are closed for a day as part of the state’s budget-cutting effort.
Friday’s closure of most state offices, combined with the Martin Luther King Jr. national and state holiday Monday, gives thousands of state workers a four-day weekend.
Friday’s closing is the sixth of 10 closure days scheduled for this fiscal year, which ends June 30. The next shutdown day will be Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Gov. John Baldacci’s proposed budget-reduction bill adds three government shutdown days to the 20 already approved for the two-year budget period.
