CALAIS – Arlene Ruth Barnard, 90, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, with her family by her side at Atlantic Rehab & Nursing Center, Calais. Arlene was born July 13, 1919, in Baring, daughter of the late Leonard and Mary “Mae” (Dowling) Wright. She graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1936, and went to work in the local shoe factory and with the American Red Cross during the World War II years. She returned home and married Arthur Charles Barnard, June 9, 1942, at St. James the Greater R.C. Church, Baileyville. Arlene began her banking career with Calais Federal Savings & Loan, National Bank and finally retiring after 30 years from Merrill Bank, July 13, 1985. She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, where she was a minister of the eucharist and a member of the Ladies Sodality. She also was a very active member of St. Croix No. 1 Fire House Association. Arlene enjoyed watching television, shopping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Foremost in her life were her beloved family and church. In addition to her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; and two brothers, Harold “Haddie” Wright and James “Ben” Wright. Surviving are her son, Richard “Dick” Barnard and his wife, Mary, of Calais; two beloved grandchildren, Christopher Barnard and his wife, Susan, of Columbia, S.C., and Marc Barnard and his wife, Betsy, of Calais; two great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Adam and Andrew Barnard; her sister-in-law, Marion Wright of Bangor; many nieces and nephews; numerous family members on her husband’s side; and many dear friends she had accumulated throughout the years. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Calais Avenue, Calais, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. James Plourde, celebrant. Burial will be held afterward at Calais Cemetery.
