Tremont men arrested in break-in, assault

TREMONT, Maine — Two local men are facing multiple charges after they were arrested early Thursday morning in connection with a break-in at a Woodland Drive residence.

Zachery Rand, 19, and Dakota Harkins, 19, both of Tremont, were arrested after they allegedly broke into the residence and assaulted the man who lived there.

The initial call to state police came in at about 2:38 a.m. Thursday, but according to State Trooper Christopher Smith, the incident began earlier at another residence near Kellytown Road in Tremont. Rand and Harkin, both of whom were very intoxicated, allegedly assaulted the man at that residence. The victim, who had not been drinking, according to the officer, left and went home.

State police received a 911 call from the same man at the Woodland Drive residence who reported that two men were trying to break into his house and that they had a knife. The caller then told police that the men had gotten in and he hung up the phone. According to Smith, once inside, the two men again assaulted the victim and then left the residence on ATVs.

Smith, Sgt. Tim Varney and Trooper David Barnard went to Woodland Drive and found the victim, who had minor injuries. He was treated at the scene by a crew from Southwest Harbor Ambulance.

The victim was able to identify the two men and officers located Rand and Harkin at separate locations in Tremont. The officers arrested the two men, both of whom had minor injuries.

Rand was taken to MDI Hospital in Bar Harbor and transferred to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth before being taken to the Hancock County Jail. Harkins was taken to the Ellsworth hospital where he spent the night. He was booked into the jail later Thursday.

Rand was charged with burglary, criminal mischief, assault and illegal possession of liquor by a minor. Harkins was charged with violation of conditional release, burglary, criminal mischief, assault and illegal possession of liquor by a minor.

Both men remained in custody as of Thursday afternoon.
