UMBC defeats Maine

ORONO, Maine — Carlee Cassidy connected for 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Sunday afternoon to propel the University of Maryland Baltimore County to a 61-52 America East women’s basketball victory over UMaine at Alfond Arena.
The Retrievers (7-8 overall, 1-1 in America East play), shot 43 percent from the field in the second half to maintain the upper hand.
Coach Cindy Blodgett’s Black Bears (4-11, 0-3 AE) were unable to contain a balanced UMBC squad and dropped their third straight contest.
Senior guard Kristin Baker of Bingham led UMaine with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Samantha Wheeler provided eight points and seven rebounds and Katia Bratishko added seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
Michelle Kurowski tossed in 17 points for UMBC, while Erin Brown contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Retrievers outscored the Bears in the paint by a 21-10 margin and wound up making seven 3-pointers.
UMaine emerged with a 37-32 rebounding edge, but missed nine free throws.
