WASHINGTON, Maine — Fire Chief Thomas Johnston said the cause of a fire Saturday afternoon on Homestead Road was unknown.
The blaze, which started at about 5:30 p.m., destroyed a building containing a garage and small workshop, and numerous tools and equipment. The home 50 feet away was not damaged.
Johnston said the investigation into the fire’s origin was still under way.
“It’s not suspicious,” he said.
Crews from Washington, Union, Jefferson and Somerville collaborated in the effort to put out the fire.
Extremely icy conditions at the scene made for treacherous footing, and several firefighters slipped and fell. None was seriously injured, said Johnston. No one else was injured.
Johnston said he didn’t know the homeowner’s correct name because she was married recently.
