More news on the Bangor dining scene. If you’ve been anywhere near the corner of Center and Cumberland Streets, you’ve probably seen the space that once housed Big Fred’s has undergone a few renovations. Wo’s Wicked Fine BBQ, a seasonally open Verona Island-based restaurant famed for its sweet, spicy barbecue sauce, has just opened its year-round Bangor location on Center Street, across from Bangor Floral Co. Wo’s is renowned for its homemade barbecue sauce, made from a special recipe by owner Charlie Wentworth. Wo’s makes two kinds of sauces — a fresh garlic, which is a mild sauce that packs a savory garlic punch, and a chipotle barbecue, which is much spicier. The sauces are available in bottles, but it’s much more fun to go inside and try their baby back ribs, pulled pork or chicken, or barbecue chicken. Wo’s Wicked Fine does both takeout and eat-in, and can be reached by calling 990-5432. They’re also a part of the One Call Delivery Service, which serves restaurants all over Bangor and Brewer. Yes, we know we’re a mere six days into 2010, but the next big holiday to look forward to is Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re sharing the day with flowers, wine and your sweetie, or you’re sharing the day with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and reruns of “The Deadliest Catch,” V-Day is a day to enjoy the finer things in life. Get in the spirit early — and get some sweet skills in the process — with a chocolate making workshop at Pairings in Winterport. Held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, the workshop will be led by Becky Potter of B Potter Wine Chocolates, a Lyman-based business selling fine chocolates handmade with Winterport Winery wines. The rumors proved true: Anthony Bourdain was in Maine last week to film an episode of “No Reservations,” his popular show on the Travel Channel. According to the Portland Press Herald, Bourdain visited J’s Oyster Bar and Street and Co. in Portland, and sampled clams, oysters and mussels. Bourdain also visited Conte’s in Rockland and attended a baked bean supper in Milo Tuesday night. Crew on site at the two Portland restaurants said the episode would air in April, so be sure to check your local listings.

While vacations might not be on the docket for many folks this winter, women in the Greater Bangor area can still get a slice of somewhere far away with the Women of the World luncheons, held monthly at the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono. WOW is a group of international women, including Americans, who gather once a month around an ethnic lunch; a cultural program featuring the country or theme represented usually follows. On Monday, Jan. 11, soups and breads from around the world will be served; on Monday, Feb. 8, a Cajun meal to celebrate Mardi Gras will be offered; and on Monday, March 8, a Finnish lunch will be on the menu. Meals begin at noon; prices for the lunch are $4 for women and children over 10, $2 children 6-10, and no cost for children under 6 who attend with their mother. For more information, call 581-3423.
