DOVER, N.H. (AP) — A prominent demographer says Maine and New Hampshire aren’t in danger of losing one of their U.S. House seats each based on the Census Bureau’s 2009 population estimates. But the picture may change in another decade.

Peter Francese, a demographic forecaster with the New England Economic Partnership, tells Foster’s Daily Democrat if a pattern of extremely low growth continues, he wouldn’t be surprised to see each state lose one of its two seats in Congress in 2020.

Francese bases his assessment on both states’ very low growth rates compared to what’s happening nationally.

Clark Bensen, the founder Virginia-based political data collection and analysis group Polidata, disagrees that either state could lose a House seats even in 2020. Bensen says it won’t happen in his lifetime.
