Bangordailynews.com is introducing a new comic strip this week from one of our own. Josh Alves, the creative services manager here and creator of another successful comic called “Tastes Like Chicken,” has begun drawing “Heropotamus,” a thrice-weekly strip about a young girl and her hippo hero/playmate.
Based on the 1953 novelty song “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas,” the strip details their adventures. The idea for the strip, Alves said, came to him as he watched his own daughters laugh and dance to the song. “As I listened to the words of the song… it hit me!, he wrote on his web site. “There’s a line that goes ‘And see a hippo hero standing there!’ That was it! A little girls gets a SUPERHERO HIPPOPOTAMUS for Christmas!”
In addition to “Tastes Like Chicken,” Alves, 27, has also drawn “Zeek And Dent,” which ran for 500 comics in the Bangor Daily News, and is currently drawing “Araknid Kid,” a series that follows the adventures of “a trapeze-bar swinging, picto-speaking western hero,” Alves said.
