Ocean plunge to benefit Special Olympics Maine

The Associated Press

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Hundreds of hearty Mainers are stripping down in the winter cold and diving into the icy ocean waters off Old Orchard Beach for the 22nd annual Lobster Dip fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics Maine.

Organizers say a record number of dippers — more than 350 — are expected at Friday’s noontime event.

The Lobster Dip is Maine’s original cold-water swim fundraiser. In its first year, about 15 people took the plunge.

Special Olympics Maine CEO Phil Geelhoed says a record 308 swimmers took part last year, raising more than $50,000.
