FAIRFIELD, Maine — A Clinton woman was killed and three others were hospitalized Monday after a two-car collision that police blame on treacherous road conditions.

Jamie Lounsbury, 24, of Clinton, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at Maine General Medical Center’s Thayer Campus in Waterville, according to Fairfield Deputy Chief of Police Steven Trahan.

Lounsbury was the passenger in a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Robert Burrell, 27, of Newburyport, Mass. Lounsbury and Burrell were traveling north on Norridgewock Road at about 8:44 p.m. when Burrell apparently lost control of the vehicle and skidded into oncoming traffic, said Trahan.

The Explorer was struck broadside by a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup driven by Darren Ridley, 33, of Farmington. Ridley’s wife, Tanya Ridley, 32, was in the passenger seat, and their 10-year-old daughter was in back.

Tanya Ridley was taken to Maine General Medical Center in Waterville with rib injuries, and the daughter suffered minor facial injuries, said Trahan. Tanya Ridley was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Burrell first was taken to the Waterville hospital before being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland with a back injury. Burrell was in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Trahan said he believed everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt.

“It appears that Mr. Burrell was traveling too fast for the road conditions,” said Trahan, who said he did not expect any charges to stem from the accident. A crash reconstructionist arrived at the scene, but was unable to determine exactly what happened because of fast-accumulating snow, Trahan said. Both vehicles were demolished.

The road was closed during the investigation and cleanup, with the last officers clearing the scene at about 11:50 p.m.
