The water that flows in the rivers and streams of Aroostook County is clear, cold and refreshing — so it makes sense that the Twenty 2 Micro Distilled Vodka made by the Northern Maine Distilling Co. in Houlton is just the same. Run by husband-and-wife team Scott Galbiati and Jessica Jewell, the vodka is crisp, clean and entirely Maine-made. The company produces only a wheat-based vodka now, but an Aroostook County potato vodka is in the works for 2010. Twenty 2 vodka will co-sponsor a New Year’s Eve party at Luna Bar & Grille on Park Street in Bangor tomorrow. Its products are also available on the shelves at stores such as Burby & Bates in Orono, Hannaford in Bangor, Bayside Liquors in Bar Harbor, and at a number of local bars and restaurants. In a very recent development — and despite having been on the shelves for less than four months — Twenty 2 Micro Distilled Vodka has been awarded the bronze medal for vodka in the 2009 World Spirits Competition, held yearly. Here at Tidbits, I don’t generally like making the rumor mill turn, but I’ve heard from several sources that none other than culinary guru and professional bon vivant Anthony Bourdain will visit Maine in January, to shoot several segments for his Travel Channel program, “No Reservations.” There aren’t many specific details as to exactly where he’ll be, but there’s a definite possibility he’ll be in Portland and in Rockland. Be on the lookout in 2010 for a Maine-themed episode. “No Reservations” is on the Travel Channel at 10 p.m. Mondays.

According to Cooking Light magazine, the best way to pack a heavy nutritional punch while still saving money and making it stretch far is to focus on a select handful of fruits and vegetables. Among fresh fruits, melons, peaches, bananas and papayas are some of the least expensive per serving. On the vegetable side, potatoes, radishes, Romaine lettuce, mustard greens and broccoli pack a healthy wallop but are light on the wallet. Is your New Year’s resolution to lose weight, get healthy and be more financially responsible? Kill several birds with one stone and try the aforementioned foods. There’s no reason you can’t eat healthfully and save money while you’re doing it.
