Casino vote sought in Maine city

LEWISTON, Maine — Voters in Lewiston may be asked whether they like the idea of using the site of a former mill for a casino.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says an investment team led by former state legislator Stavros Mendros has been collecting city voters’ signatures so a local referendum can be held in June. The investment team called Great Falls LLC wants to use the site of the former Bates Mill for the slot parlor.

If a local referendum is successful, it could set the stage for a statewide vote in 2011 on the Lewiston proposal.

A separate group is pushing for a November 2010 statewide referendum on an Oxford County casino. Black Bear Entertainment LLC last week turned in voter signatures to state election officials in hopes of forcing the vote.
