BANGOR, Maine — Motorists in Maine have three new park-and-ride lots to use.

The Maine Department of Transportation says the new lots are open in Bangor, Medway and New Gloucester.

The department’s Park & Ride Lot Program was established in 1986 in an effort to encourage carpooling as a way to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. The program now has 53 lots across the state.

The new 40-space Bangor Park & Ride is the second in the city and is located at Wal-Mart, 900 Stillwater Ave. The Medway Park & Ride lot is located at the Irving Big Stop on state Route 157 and has 26 spaces. The New Gloucester Park & Ride lot is on DOT property at the corner of Sabbath Day Road and state Route 26 with 32 spaces.
