Governor Baldacci: Mainers have spirit of giving

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Now that the anticipation of Christmas is over, Gov. John Baldacci says it’s time to think about “the better qualities of human nature.”

In his weekly radio address, Baldacci says the spirit of those who give of themselves to others is all around. Baldacci says that in countless ways, big and small, Mainers look out for one another.

In the Republican response, Sen. Bob Nutting of Oakland addresses Baldacci’s plan to cut the state budget by $438 million. Nutting praises the Democratic governor for not proposing new taxes.

But Nutting, a member of the Appropriations Committee, worries that a big chunk of the governor’s cuts are one-time funding cuts rather than structural changes that would better position the state for the future.
