ORONO, Maine — The Hampden Academy hockey team gave itself an early Christmas present Wednesday night with a 6-5 overtime triumph over Old Town.
The Broncos (1-3) together a remarkable third-period rally to tie it, scoring four unanswered goals including three in a span of 1:01 over the game’s final 1:11, and then received a power-play goal from sophomore left wing Cooper Williams with 1:29 remaining in overtime.
Old Town senior center Tyler Vandez scored four goals in a span of 4:27 that bridged the second and third periods as the Coyotes (0-4) turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead with 11:18 remaining. Cody Cross, Vandez’s linemate, had four assists, and the other member of their line, Ryan Dubay, had the other goal and an assist.
Cody McAllister began the comeback on the power play at the 7:57 mark as he fired the puck past Old Town freshman goalie Patrick Spaulding from the bottom of the right circle.
The Broncos tied it with three goals starting when Finnish exchange student Matias Majamaki scored a power-play goal with 1:11 remaining. Williams made it 5-4 just six seconds later, and junior right wing Mark Eldridge tied it with 10 seconds remaining and Hampden goalie Jake Ward on the bench in favor of the extra attacker.
