AUGUSTA, Maine — Seven Maine lakes that are infested by variable leaf milfoil have been chosen as test sites for an effort to study and possibly eradicate the invasive plants.
The Maine Milfoil Consortium says lakes to get attention with the help of a $500,000 federal grant include Sebago and Little Sebago lakes in Cumberland County, and Messalonskee Lake and Pleasant Pond in Kennebec County. In Oxford County, Shagg Pond and Lake Christopher and Thompson Lake are on the list, as is Lake Arrowhead in York County.
The consortium wants to develop a plan for containing milfoil before it attacks thousands of other lakes in the Maine, as it has in New Hampshire and Vermont. Currently, 26 Maine lakes are infested with variable leaf milfoil.
