BANGOR and ELIOT – Barbara (Roden) Crosby, 86, died Dec. 20, 2009, at a Bangor hospital after suffering injuries in a fall. She was born March 22, 1923, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of William and Ethel (Wilson) Roden. Barbara married Walter Crosby, June 17, 1949, in Seabrook, N.H. After living in Randolph, Mass., for a short time Barbara and Walter made their home in Eliot, where they raised five children and lived for nearly 40 years. Through the years, Barbara was greatly involved in all of her family’s activities from Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts to all of her children’s athletic endeavors. She was a lifetime member of First Congregational Church, Eliot and was heavily involved in all aspects of the church. She graduated from Somerville High School and Fisher School of Business. Early on, she worked as a secretary for Westinghouse Corp., Boston, but while her children were growing up she worked at home, providing a wonderful, nurturing environment for her family. She was a great cook and produced many memorable family dinners as well as everyday favorites like homemade bread. The memory of Barbara cooking over the open fire on her family’s annual camping trips will long be cherished. She enjoyed knitting, playing piano, and simply loving her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After the children had mostly grown up, Barbara returned to work as the guidance office secretary at Marshwood High School, Eliot, where she worked until her retirement. She made many friends here and truly loved working with all of the young people. On two occasions the high school yearbook was dedicated to her. After retirement, Barbara and Walter moved first to their cottage on Pushaw Lake and then to their son, Douglas’ home on Chemo Pond where Barbara lived until moving to Sunbury Village, in 2005. She enjoyed living here and made many new friends who she missed dearly after recently having to move to a local rehabilitation center. Barbara is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Russell Lablanc of Dover-Foxcroft, and Kimberly and Forrest Davis of Glenburn; and three sons and their wives, Stephen and Judaline of Eliot, Douglas and Brenda of Eddington, and Gregory and Dorenda of Eliot. Her pride and joy were her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Charles Roden and his wife, Dorothy, of Colt’s Neck, N.J. In addition to her parents; and her husband, Walter, in 1995, she was predeceased by her brother, William Roden. Funeral services will be held noon Saturday, Dec. 26, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Dr. Randall C. Chretien, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Bangor, officiating. Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the service. Interment will be at Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Augusta.
