SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The U.S. Coast Guard has been searching a bay in Maine for the source of a red flare reported by three people.

The Coast Guard says an operator of the ferry Islander, someone on Little John Island and another person on Willard Beach reported seeing the flare Sunday evening.

The search of the Casco Bay area was performed by a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station South Portland and a Falcon jet crew from Air Station Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Coast Guard officers are asking anyone with information on the flare to call them.

A Falcon jet crew is scheduled to resume searching at sunrise Monday.

The Falcon crew is based on Cape Cod but responded from Burlington, Vt., where it was staying because of the snowstorm.
