LEVANT, Maine — A U.S. postal inspector, with help from local law enforcement, is investigating two separate but related burglaries at the Levant post office in the past month and wants the public’s help.

Michael Desrosiers, a postal inspector based in Portland, said the burglaries occurred on Nov. 27 and again on Dec. 14. Both incidents involved the same means of entry — a broken window — and both resulted in hundreds or thousands of dollars in goods stolen.

Desrosiers declined to elaborate on what exactly was taken during the burglaries but said inventory still was being assessed. He also said the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is prepared to offer a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that might lead to a conviction.

The Levant post office does not have security cameras, and Desrosiers declined to say whether any physical evidence was found at the scene. Theft or tampering of mail is a federal offense.

Anyone with information about the burglaries may contact Desrosiers at 871-8547, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department at 947-4585 or the Maine State Police at 866-2121.
