LINCOLN, Maine — Police are seeking as many as four men in connection with a road rage incident in which a Winn motorist was driven off Route 2, attacked and had his cell phone stolen.

Surveillance cameras at the West Broadway Circle K convenience store, interviews and evidence gathered from the Winn man’s car have helped Officer Richard York identify at least one of the men, interim Police Chief Phil Dawson said.

“We have two suspects as of right now,” Dawson said Thursday. “We know we can identify one, and we think we can identify the other. We are relatively certain it’s a close relative. We don’t know who the other two guys are.

“We will wait and see what we generate out of the follow-up investigation,” Dawson added.

The 22-year-old Winn man suffered minor injuries for which he sought treatment at Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln shortly after the incident, York said.

The incident began shortly after 1 a.m. on Dec. 5 with the vehicles apparently arriving randomly at the gas station and getting service. It continued onto Route 2 into North Lincoln, York said, with the men following the Winn man’s vehicle.

The Winn motorist was forced onto the shoulder of the road by the other vehicle, halted, was threatened and hit, and had his cell phone stolen before the four men fled. The assailants apparently did not know whom they attacked, York said. No motive beyond simple robbery has developed.

The charges the men could face include assault, driving to endanger, criminal mischief, criminal threatening and robbery, at a minimum, Dawson said.

Anyone with any information about the suspects or the incident is asked to call police at 794-8455. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.

York said he expects the investigation will take several weeks to conclude.
