LEBANON, Maine — A Maine man charged with killing a woman whose remains were found in the bottom of a well was among those who showed up at a Lebanon property last spring while a police dive team searched the well for the missing woman.

Foster’s Daily Democrat reported Tuesday that 22-year-old Robert Copley of Hiram casually smoked a cigarette and talked to a reporter last June while police searched the well for Frances Moulton of Sanford. Moulton was 25 when she went missing in July 2006.

The search uncovered Moulton’s remains, and Copley was charged with murder Friday.

The newspaper said when police searched the well, Copley changed his story while talking to a reporter. He was spotted the next day exiting a state police vehicle at the scene.
