BRUNSWICK, Maine — Maine’s congressional delegation is urging the Navy to leave behind its instrument landing system when the Brunswick Naval Air Station closes.

In a letter to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, the delegation voiced concern that the Navy may move the landing system to another installation. The lawmakers said it’s important to retain the system even after the Navy’s runways close next month to assist in redevelopment efforts down the road.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority originally petitioned to keep the system intact.

The instrument landing system allows larger aircraft to land and take off in all weather conditions, something that’s vital to efforts to utilize the twin runways down the road.
