BANGOR, Maine — The Penobscot County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, or MaineCF, established in 2009, will make its first grants this winter.

“The Penobscot County Fund is a permanent source of funding for local nonprofits seeking to address the changing needs of county communities,” said Meredith Jones, president and CEO of the foundation.

The deadline for groups to apply is Jan. 15, 2010. Guidelines and application are available at www.mainecf.org or by calling 877-700-6800.

Overseeing the fund is the newly formed Penobscot County Committee: Mike Aube, vice chair; Dr. Frank Bragg; Susan Carlisle, chair; Lee Cummings, Jean Deighan, Valarie Flanders, Susan Hammond, Judy Horan, Rabbi Darah Lerner, Matt Polstein, Nat Putnam and Tom Thornton.

The fund was launched with a $100,000 gift from the Junior League of Bangor. Additional funding from the family of the late Herb Sargent and MaineCF’s Haskell-Stetson Fund helped increase the fund to the $500,000 required to begin making grants.

MaineCF is already an active funder in Penobscot County through individual donors, the Penobscot Valley Health Association Fund and a variety of scholarship funds.
