MTV’s ‘Jersey Shore’ far from washed up

It has been a while since MTV has offered up some hit reality TV that appeals to anyone over the age of 25, but they have finally found it with “Jersey Shore” and the show is being talked about all over the Internet.

The show took some criticism before it even started for portraying Italian-Americans in a bad light, but I think that has already been done with “Real Housewives: New Jersey,” and to tell you the truth it’s time to get over it and move on.

Last week, The Man on the Couch had to work late and my channel surfing washed me up on “Jersey Shore’s” first episode. Much like “Real Housewives,” the drama drags you in and there’s no turning back. The cast of characters includes eight young adults living in Seaside Heights — a New Jersey summer hot spot — and the show follows them through the trials and triumphs of everyday life.

As always, there has to be one cast member who proves to be annoying, and it has got to be Snooki (whose real name is Nicole). Going to the gym with perfectly placed hair and enough makeup for at least three nights out on the town is just wrong. A little lip gloss I’m OK with, but it’s obvious that weights aren’t what she’s looking to pick up.

If you missed the first couple of episodes, don’t worry. They’re available at www.mtv.com complete with bonus clips. Even if you don’t think it’s your cup of tea, it’s nice to see some sun and sand and pretend for a moment that you’re there instead of buried in snow and ice.

Check out new episodes at 10 p.m. Thursdays.

And speaking of “Real Housewives”-like drama, VH1 is catching on to the trend with its new “Basketball Wives.” The show is set to premiere in March and according to the Hollywood Reporter will feature the wives and girlfriends of Shaquille O’Neal, Eric Williams, Antoine Walker, Jermaine O’Neal and Udonis Haslem.

Ladies, just tell your men it’s a show about the NBA and before they have a chance to complain that it’s girly reality TV it will be too late — they’ll already have been sucked in.
