Plea deal for firefighter accused of sex crimes

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine firefighter accused of sex crimes by two teenage girls who participated in a youth firefighter program has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and violating bail conditions in exchange for dismissal of sex charges.

The plea agreement Monday ended jury selection for a second trial for 42-year-old Craig Rawnsley. He was acquitted in September of charges involving the first victim, who claimed they had sex multiple times.

Rawnsley was a member of the Portland and Cumberland fire departments when he was arrested in October 2008. he claimed the girls fabricated the story.

Defense lawyer Thomas Hallett says prosecutors’ agreement to drop the remaining charges backs up his assertion that no sex crimes were committed.
