Bates tops Husson at 42nd Paul Bunyan Classic

BANGOR, Maine — Tourney MVP Chris Wilson of Brewer scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Bates College men by Husson University 75-63 in the 42nd annual Paul Bunyan Classic championship game at Newman Gym Saturday afternoon.

The 5-2 Bobcats controlled the tempo and the boards while exhibiting consistent defensive pressure to keep the Eagles from getting in transition.

Brian Ellis scored 19 to go with a team-high eight rebounds and Ryan Weston of Bangor finished with 10 points and seven boards.

For the 3-3 Eagles, Jay Uhrin of Winterport scored 17, Brock Bradford of Kenduskeag 15, and Matt MacKenzie of Warren 13. Josh Jones had seven points and 11 rebounds.

In the consolation game, the University of Maine at Fort Kent pulled away in the second half and turned back a comeback attempt by the University of Maine at Machias for a 95-83 victory.

Ilija Kalajdzic led all scorers with 21 for the 3-4 UMFK Bengals. He also had nine rebounds. Othniel Hyliger had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Goran Nagradic hit five 3-pointers for 17 points.

Zach Armstrong led the 3-3 UMM Clippers with 17 points. Clifford McDonald had 15 points and eight rebounds.
